And, true to form, when the seachange came in Angelina's life it followed the same forceful path as many of her earlier directions. These days the Lara Croft star is a proud mum of three who earns column inches for her support of charitable organisations and high-profile approach tomotherhood.
It was never just her headline-grabbing antics and traffic-stopping appearances that propelled the bee-stung-lipped beauty into the limelight, however. Angelina's collection of awards, which includes two Golden Globes, was enhanced with one of Hollywood's greatest gongs in 2000 – a Best Supporting Actress Oscar - for her portrayal of charismatic sociopath Lisa in Girl,Interrupted.
Acting is in the blood for Angelina who was born in LA on June 4, 1975, to actor Jon Voight and former model and actress Marcheline Bertrand. Raised in New York by her mother along with her older brother, James – her father left when she was just a baby – Angelina won a place to study at the Lee Strasberg-Theater-Institute when she was just 11.
Work as a model and appearances in music videos for the Rolling Stones and Lenny Kravitz led to small film parts. In 1995, she won her first starring role in the cyber-thriller Hackers, where she met her first husband, British actor Jonny Lee Miller. To the shock of anyone expecting a white wedding, the bride walked down the aisle clad in black rubber trousers and a white shirt with the groom's name scrawled on the front - in her own blood.
Her 2000 wedding to fellow actor Billy Bob Thornton, whom she fell in love with on the set of the comedy Pushing Tin, proved equally unconventional. After a whirlwind romance, the couple took their vows at a Las Vegas chapel, both dressed in jeans, and with Angelina sporting a Billy Bob tattoo on her arm. In 2001, the maverick pair adopted a seven-month-old Cambodian orphan,Maddox.
Thereafter, however, their lives seemed to drift apart, with the rebellious beauty citing changing priorities - her concentrating on their son and charitable causes, him plunging into his music - and in July 2002 Angelina filed-for-divorce.
Following the breakup, the actress immersed herself in her career and charity work. A UN goodwill ambassador since 2001, she has criss-crossed the world on behalf of the organisation in recent years, drawing attention to the poor and disaffected across the globe. In 2005 Angelina added to her family by adopting an Ethiopian baby called Zahara.
Meanwhile, Angelina's career continued to flourish, and the beginning of 2005 brought a new man into her life - both on screen and off. Brad Pitt, who was then still married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, starred opposite Angelina in Mr & Mrs Smith. Although the pair denied there was anything between them, Brad's marriage to Jen ended, and he was snapped squiring his onscreen partner on jaunts around the globe.
In January 2006 the news broke that Angelina was expecting Brad's baby, and publicists' for both parties confirmed what the world had long since figured out - that the pair were a couple. Their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, was born in May 2006. At last ,in March 2007 Angelina has been adopted a Vietnamese 3 ½ year old boy with the new name Pax Thien Jolie ,the adoption was added to her a reputation as a most famous “housewife” actress.
